=========================================================================

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a character
encoding based on the English alphabet. ASCII is a seven bit binary
encoding, spanning the values 0 to 127. The first 32 codes are devoted
to control characters. Codes 33 to 126 are the printable characters.
This file will only discuss a subset of the printable characters, the
ASCII alphabet codes.

ASCII codes 65 to 90 map to the uppercase letters 'A' through 'Z'. The
codes 97 to 122 map to the lowercase letters 'a' through 'z'. Lowercase
and uppercase codes for the same letter, differ only by a single bit.

The following table lists the ASCII code in binary and decimal for each
letter of the alphabet. Binary codes are represented here by the last
five bits, the portion of the bit sequence consistent across the uppercase
and lowercase code for the letters. To derive the full seven bit code,
the binary codes in the table for uppercase letters should be preceded by
the bits '10', while lowercase letters should be preceded by the bits '11'.

Much time has passed since you embarked on your desperate
quest for the Holy Grail. You have scaled Mount Tornado, hoping
that its summit would yield some insight as to the Grail's
location. You have plumbed the deepest recesses of the
Dwarven Treasury for answers. You have unfortunately still
not seen any dragons. Today all your hard work finally pays
off, as you find yourself in front of a foreboding castle
nestled deep within the mountains. Using a simple enchantment
to disguise yourself, you slip through the guards at the front
entrance and find yourself in...
The following is a much abbreviated version of the adventure game. Most of the key portions are show below.

Lower Hallway (North)
You are in the entranceway. There is a rope ladder against the
west wall leading up to the floor above. There is a small chest
fastened to the east wall. There is also a poster on the east wall.
The main hallway stretches before you to the south. The exit
to the castle is to the north. The grand banquet hall lies

bedroom is to the southwest.

nmsc:\> look poster
The poster describes an attempt by some tree-hugging druids to
use the Sun to power the castle's magical defenses. It doesn't
really seem that interesting.

One of the two art-related puzzles.
nmsc:\> talk picture
"Let's play a game," the picture shouts merrily. "The pictures
around me come from a faraway land, and we're trying to spread
awareness of our land, to promote tourism. I'll ask you some
simple questions about them, and you can try to figure out
the answers! What do you say?"

Without waiting for you to respond, the picture launches into
its first question.

"We'll start with an easy one. This picture over here shows
a house on a particular road in one of our many kingdoms.
What's the name of the road?"

nmsc:\> say camelia street
"Very good! Now for one that is a little tougher... There is a
famous man in our legends that wandered the land for many, many
nights, seeking to clear his name for a misdeed he did not commit.
In which kingdom did he spend his 36th night?"

nmsc:\> say nevada
"Excellent! You're doing very well. Last question: There is a
painting near me that depicts two roads, crossing, in one of
our largest kingdoms. In which city do these two roads meet?"

nmsc:\> say los angeles
"Fantastic! That was fun. You know, for a picture on the wall,
I know a lot of things...

If I were you, I would give a lot of thought to the gem associated
with my last name."
With that, the picture falls silent.

Obtaining the partial data from the "parchment".
nmsc:\> look
You're in an outhouse. There is a hole in the ground at
the far end of the room. The exit is to the south.

nmsc:\> look hole
The hole, surprisingly, is a magical fairy hole that
smells like freshly cut flowers.

What do you want from me? It's a freaking hole in the
ground full of human waste... what do you think it looks like?

There is a small scrap of unused outhouse parchment by the right side
of the hole.

nmsc:\> look parchment
Seems abrasive.
The parchment reads, "_E_P_E_E_I_G_K_E_H_D_R_L_P_E_S". Epee ig kehdrlpes?
This castle sucks.

nmsc:\> inventory
You are carrying:
copper coins
silver coins
gold coins

Obtaining the partial poem.
nmsc:\> talk guard
He's too busy being poor to say anything to you. Maybe you can
help him out.

nmsc:\> help guard
Commonly used commands are:

GO (direction), INVENTORY, GIVE, LOOK, TAKE, TOUCH, SAY, TALK, KILL, READ

nmsc:\> give coin to guard
Which coins?

nmsc:\> inventory
You are carrying:
copper coins
silver coins
gold coins

nmsc:\> give copper coin to guard
The guard looks around quickly and pockets your coin. "Don't tell
anyone I showed you this," he whispers as he flashes you a scrap
of parchment. You only catch a glimpse of what looks like the
end of a poem:

...
Then back to the turd,
Then figure it out (if you're smart).

You're beginning to think that that wasn't even worth the copper.

nmsc:\> give silver coin to guard
Are you crazy? That could buy you at least two goats back home!

nmsc:\> give gold coin to guard
Are you crazy? That could buy you two goats, a lumber mill,
and a wench of your choice back home!

nmsc:\> go east
Outside King's Bedroom
You are outside King Cosmo's bedchamber, which is to the south.
There is a castle guard standing outside the door. The upper
hallway lies to your west. There is another room to your east,
but you don't need to go there.

nmsc:\> go south
Cosmo's Room
You are in King Cosmo's bedchamber. There is an hourglass
mounted on the wall. There is an elaborate chest in the center
of the room. The exit is to the north.

nmsc:\> look chest
The chest crackles with magical energy. A dazzling array of
brightly colored gems is inset into the lid of the chest.

nmsc:\> open chest
The chest is firmly locked by wizardly magicks.

nmsc:\> look gems
This is one pricey security system. Arranged in a pattern
on the chest's lid are a pink gem, a red gem, an orange gem,
a yellow gem, a green gem, a blue gem, a purple gem, a
black gem, a... silver... gem, and, umm... a brown gem. These gems
surround a star-shaped diamond. The gems look very touchable, but
something about them makes you think you should think carefully
before acting.

Unlocking the chest after all the data (real and virtual) for the code has been obtained.
nmsc:\> touch red gem
You touch the red gem. It briefly lights up, then goes dim.

nmsc:\> touch green gem
You touch the green gem. It briefly lights up, then goes dim.

nmsc:\> touch black gem
You touch the black gem. It briefly lights up, then goes dim.

nmsc:\> touch red gem
You touch the red gem. It briefly lights up, then goes dim. The
star-shaped diamond begins glowing.

nmsc:\> touch diamond
You touch the star-shaped diamond. You hear a click, and feel
the dissipation of magical energy.

nmsc:\> open chest
You open the chest slowly, as angelic music plays. Nestled inside is a
beautiful jeweled chal...
Wait a second, the Grail is just a goddamn cup? You thought
it was a huge sword or something. Or magical nunchucks, at the very
least. You feel like crying.

nmsc:\> look chest
The chest is open. There is a Grail inside, waiting to be taken.

nmsc:\> look grail
Yup, it's a cup. Just take it and let's get out of here.

nmsc:\> get cup
Sighing, you decide you might as well take it. You can use it for the
mead later tonight when you're drowning your sorrows over having
just wasted the last ten years of your life.

As you remove the Grail, you notice that the words "Telephonicke cypher:
KING ARTHUR'S" are inscribed in on the inner lid of the chest.

You have won Dragon Quest!

This could be it. It looks like this unassuming device is the
universal decryptor that you've been trying so hard to retrieve. It doesn't
seem like you can do anything with it now, so while we here at NMS try to make
some sense out of what could be the cryptographic breakthrough of
the century, our Microsoft internal field office wants your help with some
cold case files. Head to the downstairs cafeteria to meet our local agents.

Some unbelievable news. The device which you retrieved from Cosmo's
safe, which it looks like he extracted directly from the grey cube,
does appear to be the Holy Grail of codebreakers. Government secrets,
airport security, any financial institution you can think of -- they
are yours for the taking. When it comes to security, however,
everyone knows what the ultimate prize is. We at NMS have sent you
the encrypted password screen for the most notoriously secretive
organization in the world. If you manage to crack this, then you
really will be able to bring the world to its knees.

Type 'view impossible' to load this.

We are stunned, and a little frightened. It appears that nothing is safe
from this insidious machine. The organization you've broken into, of course,
is none other than BJ's Restaurant, at 10690 N. De Anza Blvd in Cupertino.

Anyone want some free pizza?

Head over there immediately!
